The other day I felt a bit of a chill coming on, nothing much you understand, one of those annoying tickly throats and a bit of a shiver. I thought to myself I had better take something but what exactly? There are so many different offerings these days. I stood in the pharmacy and stared at all the different things I could buy. They all seemed to be different, yet remarkably to have pretty much the same ingredients. One for a tickly throat, another for a cough, another for a tickly throat with a cough, another for shivers, another for shivers with a sore throat and yet another that claimed to fix all three. A look through the ingredients determined that were all the same, although the lemon one had “artificial lemon flavor” and the cherry one had “artificial cherry flavor”- but that was about it.
What to do? What to try? Should I get a brand name as opposed to a store brand and save myself half the dosh – and these things cost a lot of dosh. Should I add something to them like acetaminophen or oxycodone or something else starting with oxy? The pharmacist was against this and he seemed like a wise pharmacist -- half moon glasses that he looked over the top of while holding the lapels of his lab coat like a seasoned medical professional. “What would you take” I asked; he replied “go home, boil some water, let it cool slightly, stick the juice of a lemon into a glass, add some honey, cinnamon and a good slug of whiskey and warm with the water, drink, go to bed.”
So I did, and in the morning I felt great! Sometimes the old remedies really are the best.
